The purge – conducted by officials from the County Government and the area chief – has taken away the usual pomp and colour – that has for years defined the youthful neighbourhood.

You no longer get to see a procession of young men and women, walking into these spots in the evening or on weekends to pass time.   

The usual sound of music coming from some of the establishments has cleared from the air – like smoke on a windy day.

The streets around are the larger USIU/GBS community is mostly empty.

Heavy writings sprayed on the metallic doors of what used to be ‘drinking spots’ is all that is left – promptly serving as a subtle warning to residents and business owners.

Some of the residents of the area told Wananchi Reporting that they have had to endure the innumerable side effects of the closures – with other complimentary businesses left to struggling for breath.

Janet Omollo who owns a small shop that supports her family in the area said her livelihood has been greatly affected following the purge.

“Officials from the county offices and the police have been hovering around, which has slowed down other businesses,” she said.

Police have in the past accused some of the pubs of propagating excess noise, drug peddling, thuggery, rape, stabbings and a wide range of other criminal activities.

According to the residents, many young people in the area have lost jobs, and are just now trying to collect themselves, to find new jobs.

Other businesses, like groceries and butcheries, have reportedly recorded decreased sales following the recent closures.

Youth in the area have been urged to explore different ventures – and avoid drugs and unregulated liquor.
