In a Gazette Notice dated Friday, March 29, the CS appointed six members to each committee in 38 counties. Among those included in the committees are representatives from county governments.
Also included in the committees are representatives of the Public Transport Operators Association and representatives for special groups.
The appointments were made across 38 counties including Kilifi, Lamu, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Kwale, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Nyandarua and Kirinyaga.
Other countries where the CS made the appointments were Murang’a, Kiambu, Turkana, Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Baringo, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira.
Nairobi County also has a committee of six appointed including Moses Kuyaki, Samuel Musumba, Fredrick Githaiga, Kenneth Onyango, Peter Mwaura Mbogo and Duncan Kibogong.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 21 of the National Transport and Safety Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport appoints the following persons whose names appear in the second column of the Schedule to be members of the Transport and Safety Committee for their respective counties, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 16th February 2024," read the notice in part.
Roles of the Committees
As detailed in the NTSA Act, the newly appointed committee members will be tasked with overseeing the management of the road transport system in the counties.
They will also be tasked with advising NTSA on matters affecting the respective transport systems in their counties.
"Each county transport and safety committee shall be under the direction and supervision of the Authority and shall prepare and submit to the Authority such audit reports as the Authority may require on the safety, reliability and efficiency of the road transport system within the county.
"They will also perform such other functions as may be assigned to it by the Authority," reads the Act in part.
