- The group of over 30 youths graduated from the maiden graduation of The Mombasa Worthstart Barista and Mixology Institute.
Tens of youths from the Coastal region equipped with barista and mixology skills celebrated their graduation on Saturday.
Their graduation means that they are now ready to tap into a tourism job market, a key economic activity in the region that most of them could not get into.
The group of over 30 youths graduated from the maiden graduation of The Mombasa Worthstart Barista and Mixology Institute.
James Wanjohi, Co-Founder of Worthstart Barista and Mixology Institute, while speaking at the graduation ceremony said:
“This is one of the shortest courses in the world that allows one to get a well-paying decent job. All five-star hotels in the world don’t run without a barista. It is a basic course that one needs to shine in the tourism sector,” he said.
“Our main target is to ensure Kenyans utilize the advantage they have in the UAE market where they are highly favoured for employment. Out of ten baristas in a UAE hotel, 7 are Kenyans,” he said.
Wanjohi said several of them have in the past been locked out due to the lack of requisite skills and certifications.
Worth Start Mombasa Manager Heather Morris Naomi on her part said:
“The calls by the graduands to the government is to recognize the profession and put in place regulations as part of reforms in the country to weed out illicit liquor consumption by having licences issued to only them to operate in bars, hotels and entertainment joints.”
