JKIA Launches New Luggage Clearance and Delivery Service

According to Humphrey Mbogo, one of the project leads for the project dubbed Airport Mtaani, this will be a boost for travellers who will enjoy the convenience of having their bags cleared by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Customs desk.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has launched a new service aimed at clearing and delivering luggage at the traveller's preferred drop-off point, making it possible for passengers to alight and head straight to their destinations, knowing their luggage will be delivered to their doorstep.

According to Humphrey Mbogo, one of the project leads for the project dubbed Airport Mtaani, this will be a boost for travellers who will enjoy the convenience of having their bags cleared by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Customs desk.

The Airport service will then have the luggage dropped off at the traveller's home, hotel or any other place as requested by the passenger.

“You just come, land, clear immigration and go where you need to be. We will be left behind to clear it through customs, clear KAA and get it to your hotel or home,” stated Humphrey Mbogo during the service's official launch.

The initiative is also expected to be piloted at other airports in the future.

Speaking during the launch, Kenya Airports Authority Chairperson Caleb Kositany also revealed plans to expand the airport.

He noted that the airport design is dated and not optimal enough to service the growing number of passengers using the facility on an annual basis, necessitating the expansion.

Part of the expansion plans includes the creation of a new terminal that will have a capacity of 20 million passengers.

Further, KAA plans to oversee renovations at Terminal 1E on top of supervising the installation of new equipment.

“This involves the construction of an additional terminal facility at JKIA with a capacity of handling 20 million passengers annually, the upgrading of facilities in terminal 1E to permanent status, and the installation of equipment and systems for air navigation services," the document detailing the plan reads in part.

The implementation of the plan is expected to commence later this year, with the completion date penciled in for the financial year 2025-2026.

Additionally, in the series of changes to be carried out in the airport, travellers will also be required to make all payments for the services through a cashless system.

They will use the USSD Code *566# to make all the payments, including parking fees within the airport.
