Senator Sifuna Says Governor Sakaja Doesn't Pick His Calls, Is Inaccessible.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has accused Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of ignoring his calls, saying they are not friends but leaders elected to serve the same people.

Speaking on the Mic Cheque podcast, Sifuna said he has never been friends with Sakaja, and this has led to a frosty relationship between them.

Sifuna accused Sakaja of pretence, saying he uses stunts to dupe the public most of the time.

"The problem I have with him is that he thrives in a lot of PR (public relations). If you sit with him he makes very many empty problems. You see if someone did their job... we don't have to be friends. We can be cordial. When I call him he doesn't pick my calls yet I'm his Senator," Sifuna said.

The senator further said Sakaja does not fulfil what has been agreed upon in development discussions.

"As a Senator I shouldn't be addressing the Governor through the media or the floor of the house (Parliament), but he is also inaccessible. Also, we summon him to house committees and he refuses to show up," Sifuna added.

He gave the example where Sakaja was recently supposed to appear before the Energy Committee regarding the Embakasi gas explosion, but he did not show up.

Instead, the governor wrote to the committee saying he was attending the burial of the father to Embakasi Central MP Mejja Donk.

"The CS Energy came, NEMA came and everyone summoned came. But the Governor said he was attending the burial. I also attended the burial but that was after I attended the committee sitting. So the governor has contempt for the Senate and the committees," Sifuna further accused Sakaja.

Referencing the recent Ksh.500,000 fine imposed on Sakaja for missing summons by the housing committee, Sifuna said the governor has prompted the Senate to raise the fine to Ksh.2 million, to deter other leaders from skipping the summons.

Sifuna also says the Senators have resolved to have powers of arrest for those skipping house summons.
